There are five versions of this portrait, considered to be more or less by the same hand, and curiously the first was acquired by King Charles IV of Spain, then one of France's rare allies (now in the Musée de Malmaison). Bonaparte commissioned other copies, this one first, for the Hôtel des Invalides. This extremely famous image has captivated the popular imagination for over two centuries.
