Coleção: Hans Andersen Brendekilde

Hans Andersen Brendekilde (April 7, 1857 Brændekilde, Odense Municipality - March 30, 1942, Jyllinge) was a Danish painter🎨.
Hans Andersen Brendekilde grew up in Braendekilde, a small village near Odense, on the island of Funen.

He was a distant relative of Hans Christian Andersen, the famous fairy tale writer, and like his relative had a very poor childhood.
Both their parents were clog makers.

At 4 years old Brendekilde left his parents and lived with his grandparents until he was 10, at which point he earned his living as a shepherd, having food and lodging.

At school, a teacher discovered his ability to carve animals in wood and from 1971 to 1974 he was an apprentice of the woodcarver and stonemason Wilhelm Hansen in Odense.
In 1877 he was educated as a flower painter by O.A. Hermansen and in the same year he was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
His teachers were the sculptors Jens Adolf Jerichau and Harald Conradsen (1817-1905).
