Since then, the museum has removed the overpainting from the famous work, which now shows an image of Cupid hanging on the wall behind the helpless young woman.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eScholars believe the newly revealed image indicates that the woman is reading a love letter. Now, the public will get a chance to test this theory. The restored canvas will be on public view for the first time in September at the museum’s painting gallery, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe painting, completed around 1657, was acquired for the Dresden city collections in 1742 and has been a centerpiece of the painting gallery ever since. For years, the painting was erroneously attributed, first to Rembrandt, then to Pieter de Hooch.
