One anecdote has Major Walter Clopton Wingfield taking up outdoor play with vulcanised rubber balls in London in 1874 and Irish painter Sir John Lavery catching the bug on his return from studies of Impressionism in Paris only a few years later. His painting lays emphasis on the girl in her hopelessly impractical yet appealing dress, dramatising her energy and concentration rather than just her femininity (we don't even see her face).
